New York Today: The City Abloom

Good morning on this soggy Tuesday.

New York offers lots of ways to honor the many novels set here.

You can inhale the smell of coffee in Williamsburg like Francie Nolan; gaze at the mansions of Fifth Avenue like Lily Bart; play cricket on Staten Island like Chuck Ramkissoon.
And today is Bloomsday, the international celebration of James Joyce and his novel “Ulysses,” which takes place over one day — June, 16, 1904 — in the life of its protagonist, Leopold Bloom.

今回取り上げるのは“soggy”です。辞書には「＜地面などが＞水浸しの、びしょぬれの」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）、“unpleasantly wet and soft”（LDOCE）とありました。日本では今の時期にぴったりの単語かもしれません。ちなみに“soggy”には「＜生焼けパンなどが＞べとべとした、ふやけた」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）という意味もあります。（Green）
