pep talk 復習

海外ドラマGLEEに、出てきたWilliam先生の台詞“Look, I don’t have any more pep talks, Finn.”の、“pep talk”が気になりました。

“pep”を『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』(大修館書店)で調べてみると、「peperの短縮語」とあり、名詞で「元気、活力、気力」を意味することがわかりました。また、そのまま“pep talk”で、「激励のための短い話(演説)」と載っていました。例えば、大事な試合の前などで、スポーツ選手を励ますためにコーチが言うような短い激励のメッセージのことを言います。“pep up”「元気づける」というphraseから、“pep talk”が生まれたそうです。

以上を踏まえてWilliam先生の台詞を訳してみると、「別に励ましに来たわけじゃないよ。」となります。(One)

F: Yeah, you know, football season ended, So I'm just cleaning out my things.
W: Sounds like something that could've waited till Monday.
F: You heard anything?
W: Yeah. It's pretty bad.

W: I don't have any more pep talks, finn. You know I know how you feel. All I know is that-- Between you and me-- I don't think that they can win without you.
F: But that's not fair. Why does it always have to come down to me? Why do I always have to be the bigger man?
W: Because sometimes being special Sucks. I just want everything to be like it-- Like it never happened, you know? Well, finn You can't always get what you want.

F: Oh, Mr. Shue, you forgot your keys.
W: No, I didn't.
