sturdy #2

(Nao)

Among structures surviving the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs and registered as such by both cities' governments, around 20 percent have been dismantled, it has been learned from the two governments, as efforts continue in both municipalities to preserve the remaining buildings.

The Hiroshima Municipal Government has registered surviving structures as "atomic bomb buildings" since 1993, and the Nagasaki Municipal Government has done so since 1998, for sites that were around 5 kilometers or closer to the blast hypocenters. Many of the surviving buildings near the hypocenters were sturdy with reinforced concrete, while further out there are surviving wooden structures such as temples and shrines. Both cities subsidize three-quarters of preservation and repair fees for the buildings, up to a maximum of 30 million yen.
