AUSTIN, Texas (Jiji Press) — Japanese sprinter Yoshihide Kiryu clocked 9.87 seconds in a 100-meter race in Austin, Texas, on Saturday with the help of an above-limit tailwind.

Kiryu, 19, of Toyo University, broke the 10-second barrier for the first time and won the race in the 2015 Texas Relays. But the result was not registered as an official record due to a tailwind of 3.3 meters per second, in excess of the maximum allowable 2 meters.
In 2013, Kiryu, then a high school student, marked 10.01 seconds, the second fastest time on record in Japan.

Among Japanese 100-meter sprinters, Yoshitaka Ito clocked 9.8 seconds by manual measurement with a tailwind of 9.3 meters in 1995.

Koji Ito, who holds an official Japanese record of 10.00 seconds, registered 9.9 seconds by manual measurement in 1999.
