"The Meaning of Americanism"（Philosophical Library New York）を読んでいる中で気になる単語を見つけたので、紹介します。

気になった単語は、”avow”です。『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館）によると、「〜を公言する、〜だと明言する、（欠点や罪など）を率直に認める」という意味がありました。対義語は、否定や反対の意味を持つ接頭辞”dis”を付け足した、”disavow”「（知識・責任・関係など）を否認［否定］する」です。

語源をネットで調べてみると、古期フランス語「認める」からきているそうです。（Nao）

Thus did Aristotle avow the importance of moral ideas in the state. And for the vast majority of Americans, that state exists with a view to some good is to be taken as axiomatic.
