Sony to spin off audiovisual unit in Oct., focus on games, sensors
Sony Corp. said Wednesday it plans to spin off its audio and visual business into a wholly owned subsidiary in October, as part of its restructuring to put greater focus on the profitable operations of video games, image sensors, music and movies.
In its latest three-year strategy, the Japanese electronics and entertainment group is aiming for a group operating profit of more than 500 billion yen ($4.2 billion) by fiscal 2017, which will end in March 2018.
"We'll seek to become a highly profitable company through reforms" without any fear of criticism and failure, Sony President Kazuo Hirai told a press conference.
