今回取り上げるのはニューヨーク近郊で３日、列車と乗用車が衝突し、少なくとも７人が死亡したことに関する記事です。この事故で亡くなった３人の男性について主に書かれています。

気になった単語は”indelible”です。「ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）」には「<思い出などが>ぬぐい去れない、いつまでも残る」という意味があり、「グランドセンチュリー英和辞典」にも「ぬぐうことのできない、永久に残る」と書いてありました。LDOCEには非常に端的に”impossible to remove or forget”と定義されています。なお，これはすでに先輩がアップされていました（恥…）。

今回の事故で亡くなられた人たちの中には科学者の方がいたようです。科学系の専門用語として気になった単語があったのでこちらも載せておきたいと思います。一つ目に”map”です。動詞で「<遺伝子を>染色体の上に置く」という意味がありました。もう一つは”engineer”です。こちらも動詞で「<遺伝子を>操作する」という意味があることがわかりました。

優秀な功績を残し、今後の活躍が期待される人物がこのような運命になってしまったことは本当に残念です。(bookmark)

Robert Dirks commuted to Manhattan from Chappaqua, N.Y., where he lived with his wife, Christine, and two young children in a pale green house on the slope of a hill. Cracking open their front door on Wednesday evening, his wife shook her head when asked about her husband.

“It’s too late,” she said, red-eyed. “It’s too late.”

A scientist who studied computational chemistry at D. E. Shaw, a research company in Manhattan, Mr. Dirks made “indelible” contributions to two burgeoning fields: molecular programming and dynamic nucleic acid nanotechnology, said Niles Pierce, the professor who oversaw his Ph.D. research at the California Institute of Technology, where Mr. Dirks met his wife.

In those still-new disciplines, Mr. Dirks was a pioneer, making scientific advances that, among other applications, enabled scientists to map multiple genes inside organisms, allowing biologists around the world to study how organisms develop. Not only did he achieve experimental breakthroughs, Dr. Pierce said, but he also developed algorithms that enabled other researchers to engineer their own molecular systems.
