Comedy duo: NHK declared political jokes off-limits for New Year's show

Popular comedy duo Bakusho Mondai said Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) put the kibosh on their plans to poke fun at politicians in a New Year's entertainment program.

The pair made the comments during the Jan. 7 installment of their weekly Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc. radio show “Junk Bakusho Mondai Cowboy,” saying all subject matter related to politicians that they prepared was spiked at a meeting with program staff.

前にも取り上げられたput the kibosh onを再び取り上げます。『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第４版（学研教育出版）には古風な言い方で、「（計画など）をつぶす、（望み）をぶちつぶす」という意味です。これだけなら、別に他の語でも成り立つと思います。さて、このイディオムには、どのような意味が含意されているのでしょうか。LDOCE5には、くだけた表現で“to stop a plan, idea etc from developping”とあります。これに対し、相方の田中裕二さんは、「政治家のネタは全部ダメって言われた」と言っています。このことから、「せっかく準備したのに…」せっかく作ったのに…」というニュアンスが出せる表現だと思いました。これを機会に覚えます。(Kawada)
