Renho Tosses Hat in Ring to Lead Opposition Democrats
Renho, who goes by one name, said she planned to run for president of the Democratic Party of Japan in an election set for Jan. 18. If elected, the 47-year-old lawmaker, who served as a cabinet member under prime ministers Naoto Kan and Yoshihiko Noda, would become the first woman to lead the opposition party.
“Although the hurdles are set high, I will face the difficulties” and run in the election, she tweeted through her official account. She said younger lawmakers have always played a role in regenerating the party.
The DPJ lost its parliamentary majority in the 2012 general election and fell far short against the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in the election held earlier this month. DPJ president Banri Kaieda resigned after losing his own seat.
Renho graduated from Aoyama Gakuin University and worked as a model and television personality before starting her career in politics. She is serving her second term in the upper house, having won a record 1.71 million votes in Tokyo in 2010. Her father is from Taiwan.
