reception on his cell phone is poor

(bookmark)

Train passengers stranded in heavy snow

About 300 passengers are stranded on a train in a mountainous area of northern Japan due to a blackout caused by heavy snow.

Power was lost on a rapid-service train on Wednesday morning on the Senzan Line, which links the cities of Yamagata and Sendai.

The blackout occurred after a tree fell on an overhead cable.

The operator of the train, East Japan Railway Company, says the passengers have been trapped for hours. The company says reaching the train is difficult because there are no roads in the area.

It says workers are trying to remove other trees that are blocking the train's path. It says it has used snowplows to bring heating pads and food to the passengers.

The railway says service is expected to resume after 2PM local time.

One teenaged passenger says the train stopped while he was on his way to school. He says there are no lights and the toilets aren't working. He says it's cold and that reception on his cell phone is poor because the train is in the mountains.

Heavy snow has been falling in the area since Tuesday.
