Call of the wild: running a dog-sledding company in Sweden
A couple from South Wales live in an isolated mountain cabin and show visitors the true wilderness, thanks to their team of huskies
When Richard Rees proposed to his girlfriend Claire, he didn’t present her with a diamond ring. Instead, he gave her a knife and an axe.
Rather than running for the hills, Claire said yes and accepted the unusual engagement gifts. She knew they’d be useful for their new life together living in a remote cabin in Jämtland, northern Sweden, without electricity and running water, in countryside populated with bears and wolves.
Together, she and Richard run Wild Spirit, a dog sledding and bushcraft survival business. Claire – now Mrs Rees – explained: “We left the UK with eight Siberian huskies, £2,000 and a lot of determination. Now we live from the forest, we have 54 sled dogs and a business which is getting stronger and stronger every year. We are living our dream.”
A rather unusual path led them from their native South Wales to the back-of-beyond in Sweden. Around 15 years ago, Richard, 41, set up a foraging and bushcraft business on the Merthyr Mawr estate near Bridgend.
“It’s something I’d been interested in since I was a young child when I used to hunt with birds of prey,” he explained. "I eventually began taking people on trips and expeditions to the north of
Sweden and I loved the area so much. It’s a true wilderness with bears and wolves. I thought to myself ‘this is where I want to move’.”
