米軍普天間飛行場の移設が争点となっていた沖縄県知事選は，移設反対を強く主張した前那覇市長の翁長雄志氏が初当選し，県民の根強い反対を再認識する結果になりました。
staunchは過去にブログで採り上げられていますが，「信頼するに足る, 誠実な」という意味の形容詞（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。ここでは「断固たる」や「ぶれない」という意味が適当と思われます（『スーパー・アンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。（Koyamamoto）

Okinawa elects new governor opposed to U.S. air base
(CNN) -- The election of a new governor in Okinawa looks set to complicate controversial plans to relocate an unpopular U.S. air base on the Japanese island.
Takeshi Onaga, a staunch opponent of the base, comfortably defeated the incumbent, Hirokazu Nakaima, in the vote on Sunday and quickly vowed to do everything he could to prevent the construction of the new facility for the U.S. Marines.
