Manhattan Speeder Says He Has Fled to Canada
A driver convicted in absentia of reckless endangerment for racing around Manhattan in 24 minutes said in a telephone interview that he had fled to Canada and did not intend to return to face a sentence of up to a year in jail.
The driver, Adam Tang, 31, a day trader from British Columbia who had an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, did not show up on Wednesday at his trial in State Supreme Court in Manhattan. He was convicted on Thursday.
“The American legal system failed me and I needed to seek protection back in my country,” he said on Friday night.
Justice Ann M. Donnelly issued a warrant for Mr. Tang’s arrest on Thursday and revoked his $15,000 bail. He has until Dec. 6 to turn himself in or he will be charged with bail-jumping, prosecutors said. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 8.
