Mt. Fuji dusted with season's first snowfall as cold weather sweeps Japan

Mount Fuji was capped with the first snow of the season on Oct. 16, as temperatures hit their lowest levels of the autumn across the country, the Kofu Local Meteorological Observatory said.

The mountain's first snow came 16 days later than average. The observatory says the temperature at the top of Mount Fuji was 12.3 degrees Celsius below freezing at 7 a.m. on Oct. 16. The city of Fujiyoshida, which lies at the foot of Mount Fuji, also reported the snowcap atop Japan's tallest mountain.
