seeとmeet

田中将大選手の復帰戦勝利に関するNYTの記事にmeetとseeの区別を理解する上で分かりやすい文があったので採り上げます。まずmeetとseeの違いについてはUG先生がご著書の中で以下のように説明されています。

seeは「見かける」だけですが，meetには「握手をしたり，言葉のやりとりをする」という含みがあるのです（『1日3分脱「日本人英語」レッスン』朝日新書, p48）

そして今回採り上げるのは“I think they were more excited to see Masahiro than to meet me,” Gardner said.という部分です。theyはヤンキースファンを指しており，Gardner選手に握手やサインをしてもらっている中，記者会見に向かう田中選手を見かける場面。Gardner選手に対しては握手やサインを求めているのでmeetが用いられており，田中選手は「見かけた」程度のためseeが用いられています。以上から「私（Gardner選手）にサインをもらっているときよりも田中選手を見かけた時の方が彼ら（ファン）は喜んでいるようであった」と解釈でき，meetとseeが効果的に用いられていることがわかります。（Koyamamoto）

Shortly after Sunday’s game, Brett Gardner went into the hallway outside the Yankees’ clubhouse to meet the fan who caught his fifth-inning home run, which was the 15,000th in team history. In exchange for the ball, Gardner took the fan and his children a couple of bats, and he signed some baseballs for them as Masahiro Tanaka walked by on his way to a news conference.
“I think they were more excited to see Masahiro than to meet me,” Gardner said.
Gardner was being modest, but there was some truth to what he said. His feat was but a novelty in a game in which Tanaka and Derek Jeter — once again — were the central figures on a day of celebration.
