Yamamoto becomes oldest to chalk up win
The Yomiuri Shimbun NAGOYA — Like the Hanshin Tigers’ batters, the remarkableness of his accomplishment didn’t really hit Masahiro Yamamoto.
Yamamoto, who turned 49 last month, became the oldest pitcher to win a game in Japanese pro baseball history, hurling the Chunichi Dragons to a 6-0 victory over the Tigers on Friday night at Nagoya Dome.
Yamamato, who allowed five hits in five scoreless innings, eclipsed the record of Shinji Hamazaki, who was 48 years 4 months when he won for the Hankyu Braves in 1950.
“It’s been 64 years?” Yamamoto said. “That’s incredible. It feels like someone else did it.”
Combining his trademark screwballs and curves with a fastball around 135 kph, the left-hander had the patience to get key strikes.
