本文のdamperは、ピアノを弾いている方には馴染み深い語ですね。ですが本文ではpur a damper on Oの形を取り、「…に水を差す」（『リーダーズ英和辞典』（第３版、研究社）という意味で用いられています。後ろにmood…とありますので、「ムードを変える」という意味だと解釈しました。LOOCE５には、”to make something less enjoyable, active, or great than it could have been”と定義されていました。ネガティブな文脈で用いられるのが多い表現の様に見えましたが、肯定的に用いられているところに個人的に興味を持った次第です。(Kawada)
