out of one's depth

先日サッカー・ワールドカップの開幕戦ブラジル対クロアチア戦の主審を日本人の西村雄一さんが務めるという話題を採り上げましたが，開幕戦が終わりの西村さんのジャッジが批判にさらされています。
out of one’s depthは基本表現ですが，もともと「(水が)深くて背が立たない」という意味でそこから転じて「(難しすぎて)理解できない; 力が及ばない」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。以前にUG先生がadd to the/one's depth（技術や芸などに厚みを増す）という表現を採り上げられていますが，これとdepthの捉え方は同じだと思われます。

Japanese World Cup Referee Under Fire
Yuichi Nishimura, the Japanese referee in charge of the World Cup opener between Brazil and Croatia, has been criticized for his performance, with Croatian coach Niko Kovac saying the 42-year-old was completely out of his depth in Thursday’s match.
