Yankees quash Mets 4-0 as Masahiro Tanaka throws complete game shutout
NEW YORK -- Wednesday afternoon, hours before Mets pitcher Rafael Montero was to make his major league debut against Yankees starter, and whirlwind, Masahiro Tanaka, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson described the clash of rookies in Biblical terms.
"In some ways this is a David and Goliath matchup," Alderson said. "One guy’s never lost. The other guy’s never pitched. So it’s interesting."
Wry and outsized, the remark was reminder of how the two organizations have gone about restructuring their clubs. The Yankees reloaded with a $175 million speculation -- wagering that Tanaka would translate from Japan to the majors with ease. The Mets waited patiently for Montero, until a foundational arm of their farm system was finally ripe enough to promote.
"We’ll see how many rocks Rafael’s got,” Alderson added.
In the end, not enough. Though Montero did not flop in his first major league start, allowing three runs over six innings, he was out-matched.
Tanaka propelled the Yankees to a 4-0 victory at Citi Field. The Yankees stopped a four-game losing streak, topping .500 again, and also ended a six-game losing streak to their intra-city rivals that had lasted through two seasons.
It was on the right arm of their ace on the mound. Tanaka overwhelmed the Mets. In 114 pitches, he swept through the Mets lineup over and over, striking out eight but allowing just four hits. He impressed everyone from Montero to Collins to the hitters he suppressed.
“We needed a win,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
“I thought Tanaka was really good again and he got better as the night went on. For him to be able to give us what he did tonight was great.”
