選考理由

W杯サッカー日本代表に関する記事から英語表現を拾います。今回採り上げるのはザッケローニ監督の人選理由We've chosen players that will not just be reactive, but rather take the initiative and play their own brand of soccerというフレーズ。
まず，reactiveは「反作用を示す, 反発する」「〈化学物質が〉よく反応する」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味の単語ですが，英英辞書にreacting to events or situations rather than starting or doing new things yourself（LDOCE）とあることから「指示通りに動く」と解釈できます。
さらに，play their own brand of ~については，the Japanese brand of baseball（日本流の野球）という用例からもわかるように，brandには「特有の種類；型」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）という意味があり「自分らしさ」意味する表現であることがわかります。

European club players have World Cup expectations running high for Japan
Among the 23 men named to Japan's national soccer team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil are 12 playing for foreign clubs. As more Japanese players seek their fortunes on the global stage, the national team is under more pressure to succeed than at any previous World Cup. Harnessing the experience of the "foreign brigade," this version of the Samurai Blue is looking to break into the final eight for the first time in Japanese soccer history.
"We've chosen players that will not just be reactive, but rather take the initiative and play their own brand of soccer," said Japan manager Alberto Zaccheroni at the May 12 news conference to announce the team. Zaccheroni, who took the helm at the end of August 2010, has been hammering home that offense-first message ever since, and the core of that aggressive style of play will be the players with European clubs.
