detached author

(Koyamamoto)

Sketches by Moomin series creator left on luncheon mat to be displayed
Sketches by Finnish cartoonist and popular "Moomin" series creator Tove Jansson (1914-2001), which were left behind on a hotel luncheon mat during a visit to Japan in 1971, will be put on display this month at a Tokyo department store.
The sketches will be shown at an exhibition at the Matsuya Ginza department store in Ginza, Tokyo, from April 16 through May 6. The exhibition will then travel to Osaka and other locations, for a total of nine stops.
At the time of her visit to Japan, Jansson was making a transition from children's literature to adult novels. The sketches include a Moomin character drinking the Japanese rice wine "sake," although consumption of alcohol was something not seen in the Moomin series itself.
Jansson's Japan visit took place in May 1971, two years after the Moomin cartoon series began to be broadcast in Japan. Together with her partner Tuulikki Pietila, she visited places including Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture and Toba in Mie Prefecture.
The sketches were inked onto an approximately A3-sized paper luncheon mat from the Toba Hotel International. In addition to Moomin, the sketches include the money-loving character "Sniff" making a pearl necklace -- a reference to the city of Toba being a pearl producer.
The luncheon mat had been at the home of former Kodansha publishing company editor Ryohei Suzuki, 75, who accompanied Jansson on her trip, and had received the mat from her as a gift.
Keiko Morishita, a Moomin researcher based in Finland, says, "Jansson is thought of as a detached author in Japan, but these sketches show a friendlier side."
The department store exhibition will commemorate what would have been Jansson's 100th birthday this year. It will be the first time that the sketches will be shown to the public.
