Yankees' Masahiro Tanaka set to make his Major League debut against Blue Jays in Toronto
HOUSTON — All spring, Masahiro Tanaka said he wouldn’t get excited for his first start until it was time for him to take the mound.
That time has finally come.
The Yankees’ $155 million man will make his major-league debut Friday night against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre, trying to lift the Bombers’ spirits following their disappointing opening series in Houston.
While Tanaka admitted that his excitement level is finally “getting up there,” he isn’t sure what kind of emotions he’ll feel when he takes the field in the bottom of the first inning.
“It’s really hard to say,” Tanaka said through a translator. “I’ll really have to feel it once I get up there on the mound.”
Tanaka went 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA in five spring outings, leading the team with 26 strikeouts while walking only three batters in 21 innings.
