Good Tuesday morning.
The temperatures is in the low 20s. Still more snow is coming late tomorrow. Tough times for urban foragers:
It’s not exactly growing season.
But across New York City, two dozen farmer’s markets stay open through the winter.
They can be lonely places, and kind of drab, too.
“Every once in a while you’ll see a nice green or red color,” thanks to hothouse veggies, said Liz Carollo of the city’s Greenmarket program.
Mostly, though, there are roots — potatoes and turnips and rutabagas — and apples from storage, and frozen meat.
And hardy grains like freekeh and spelt berries — “I pretty much live off those items in the winter,” Ms. Carollo said.
先ほどのthinkといい、今日はどうも歯切れが悪い感じです。ここのurban foragersも残念ながらそのひとつ。
動詞 forageはフランス語から来た言葉で「〔食べ物などを〕探し回る，あさる 」という意味で、その-er形なので、そういう人達のことかと思ったのですが、その後に来るファーマーズマーケット云々を読むとどうもしっくりきません。ひょっとしたらgreen thumbに近い意味合いがあるのかと思い、辞書やネットを探ったものの納得が行く説明には出会っていません。そこでNYに住んでいた友だちにも聞いてみましたが、これまた「う〜ん」と首をかしげていました。
ということでおそらくは「路上に捨てられている廃棄物を回収して再利用する人々」（cf. freegan）だとは思うのですが、ちょっと違うような...という結局は歯切れが悪い内容となりました。あ〜、住んでみないと分からない。（UG）
