Baseball: New Yankee signing Tanaka starts spring training camp
TAMPA, Florida (Kyodo) -- Japanese ace Masahiro Tanaka arrived for the official start of the New York Yankees' spring training in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday.
The 25-year-old, who signed a $155 million, seven-year deal with the Yankees using the newly revamped posting system, has drawn the spotlight as one of the team's main attractions this offseason.
He practiced in a navy blue uniform and played catch with Japanese teammate Hiroki Kuroda before throwing a bullpen session, his second in Florida after tossing about 25 pitches to Francisco Cervelli in the minor league complex on Thursday.
Tanaka, who went an astounding 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA to lead the Rakuten Eagles to their first Japan Series champion last season, began his training in Tampa on Wednesday.
The Yankees have high expectations for the right-hander, who will join the heart of the rotation led by veterans C.C. Sabathia and Kuroda, along with Ivan Nova.

throw a bullpenを文字通りとらえるとおそろしい光景が思い浮かびますが、もちろんこれは「ブルペンで軽めの投球練習を行う」という意味です。

Throw a bullpen: This is essentially a practice session for pitchers. They will literally go to the bullpen and throw 30 or so pitches. Starters throw a bullpen in between starts, usually two days before they pitch. Some guys throw their regular pen then a “light pen” the day after. This is also known as a side session.
