ghostwriter

朝のNHKニュースの謝罪にはびっくりしました。昨日もHiroshimaを聞いたばかりで、鐘の音にいやされたところでした。ショックです。(Shou-VR*)

Popular Japanese deaf composer used ghostwriter

A popular hearing-impaired Japanese composer of classical and other types of music has revealed that he has paid someone else to write his pieces for more than 10 years.

A lawyer representing Mamoru Samuragochi explained the existence of the ghostwriter early Wednesday.

Samuragochi, a 50-year-old native of Hiroshima Prefecture, is described as a self-taught composer. He has published works of music, including popular ones, while fighting deafness.

The composer told NHK that he began the practice around 1996, when he was asked to write a piece for a film. He said his hearing had worsened at the time, so he asked another composer to write more than half the work.

He reportedly continued giving compositions, orchestrations and melody images to that person, who then wrote the music.

Samuragochi says that what he did is an act of betrayal. He added that he apologizes to his fans and those who were offended by the news.

One of the works attributed to him, Symphony No.1 "Hiroshima", premiered in 2008. The piece became a major hit following the March 2011 disaster, selling more than 180,000 CDs.

He published Sonatina for Violin 2 years ago. The piece will accompany the short program of Japanese figure skater Daisuke Takahashi at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
