Abe Closes Out Best Year for Stock Market Since ’72

If Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is worried at all about the ire of Asian neighbors over his recent visit to a shrine linked to Japan’s war-time past, he didn’t show it Monday as he celebrated the final stock trading day of the year.

Mr. Abe cracked jokes and unabashedly pushed his economic policies at the Tokyo Stock Exchange in downtown Tokyo just minutes after the Nikkei Stock Average finished its best year since 1972, capping a gain of 57% for the 12 months.
