Sumire Goes Global

The daughter of actor Ishida Junichi and actress Matsubara Chiaki, Sumire moved to Hawaii with her mother when she was 7 years old. She soon set her sights on a performing arts career, and entered the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She has now taken a break from her studies, however, to get a head start on her showbiz dreams in Japan.

"I'm finally talking to myself in Japanese again," Sumire said of her return to her home country, though she still feels like she is translating English into Japanese when she speaks. Nevertheless, she is now "concentrating on Japan," and in more ways than one.

"There's a bit of an 'Asian boom' going on in the U.S. right now, and there's quite a bit of Japanese stuff out there, too," says Sumire. "Some of it is pretty stereotypical, though, so I want to tell people the real story through NHK World TV."
