昨日、UG先生からご教示いただいたのがこのparlay~intoです。parlayはもともとギャンブルから来たことばで、賭けに勝って入手したお金で、さらに勝負に出て増やすことを意味するそうです。
早速、LDOCEにあたってみますと、"American English to use advantages that you already have, such as your skills, experience, or money, and increase their value by using all your opportunities well"とあります。
この見出しの場合、伊勢神宮は第62回式年遷宮という神道の儀式を利用して（？）観光客を大幅に増やしたことが分かります。果たしてこれが適切な言い回しかどうかは「？」ですが、元金をどんどん増やして大もうけをするという意味の核は残しておきたいと思います（例：He owned five movie theaters, which he eventually parlayed into hotels.--LDOCE）。（Shou-VR*）
Ise Jingu parlays Shinto ritual into record crowds
TSU, MIE PREFECTURE – Ise Jingu Shrine, fresh off its Sengyo-no-gi in October, the main event in the “shikinen sengu” ritual of transferring the deity to a new shrine building every two decades, is drawing record crowds.
The number of worshippers flocking to the shrine in Ise, Mie Prefecture, passed the 10 million mark this year for the first time since tallies were first kept in 1896.
