golden boy

カタカナになった「ゴールデンボーイ」はスポーツの影響からか、特定の試合で大活躍をした選手のことを指すと思いがちですが、英語の方のgolden boy/girlはちょっと違います。

Cambridge Idioms Dictionaryの定義をみると、"someone who is successful and admired"とあります。つまり特定の試合で活躍した選手のことではなく、「(若くして)成功し、賞賛の対象になっている人」を表すことばということが分かります。(UG)

Everton target Keisuke Honda agrees to join AC Milan on a free transfer in January

The Japanese midfielder is out of contract with CKSA Moscow next month and Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has confirmed the switch

AC Milan have confirmed they will sign Keisuke Honda on a free transfer next month.

The Japanese international's contract with CSKA Moscow will expire at the end of the month and he will become the Rossoneri's first signing of the winter.

Honda had been linked with a whole host of clubs and was reportedly close to joining Everton in a £5m deal last summer.

However, Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani announced he had agreed to join the Serie A club, once his CSKA deal comes to an end.

He told the club's official website: "Now we can talk. From January 3 2014, Keisuke Honda will be a Milan player."

The 27-year-old played his last game for the Moscow club - in the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Viktoria Plzen last night - with the Russian season set to restart again in March.

The result in the Czezh Republic ended the club's hopes of continuing their European season into the New Year and Honda's attentions will now turn to pushing 9th placed Milan up the Serie A table.

Galliani also confirmed the midfielder could make his debut against Atalanta at the San Siro on January 6.

The move is likely to come as a boost to the Japanese national side ahead of next summer's World Cup.

Honda is his nation's golden boy and after being drawn alongside Colombia, Greece and Ivory Coast in Group C, he will be called upon to lead them into the knockout stages.
