Japan enacts controversial secrecy law

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan on Friday enacted a controversial secrecy law to prevent leaks of state secrets, as the ruling coalition forced it through the House of Councillors without bridging a gap with the opposition camp over an independent oversight system to ensure the public's right to know.

The legislation, which some fear could undermine the public's right to know and freedom of the press, was approved by the upper house by a vote of 130 to 82. Its passage marks a major step forward for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's drive to remake the country's defense posture.
