adaptationと聞きますと「順応、適応」でお馴染みの単語ですが本文では「[・・・用の]改造物;改作、翻案物[for]」(『ジーニアス英和辞典 第3版』大修館)という定義になります。またOxford Dictionaries Onlineを参照してみますと、"a film, television drama, or stage play that has been adapted from a written work "とありました。(Shou-VR*)
‘Akira’ creator Otomo feted by Japanese government
Manga artist and anime director Katsuhiro Otomo, creator of the internationally-acclaimed manga series “Akira” and director of its film adaptation, was honored by the Japanese government with its Medal with Purple Ribbon in November, a very rare honor for a practitioner in the animation industry. The medal is given by the Japanese government to individuals who have contributed to academic and artistic developments, usually to individuals who have contributed to traditional arts, crafts and performing arts. Otomo is only the fourth animator to receive the prestigious honor.
According to the citation from the Japanese government, Otomo was honored with the medal for “his unparalleled skills in illustration, composition, storytelling and acute visual sense that went into the many excellent works he produced as a manga artist and animation film director over a long period of time, which resulted in garnering international attention and contributing to development of our country’s fine arts and culture.” Previously, only three other animation artists have been given the award: Yoji Kuri, Taku Furukawa and Isao Takahata.
