Fukushima whitebait shipment resumes

The shipment of whitebait caught in waters off Fukushima Prefecture has resumed for the first time since the nuclear accident there.

On Monday, the Soma Futaba fishery cooperative shipped 900 kilograms of whitebait caught on a test basis on Friday.

Cooperative officials say the fish was tested for radiation before and after undergoing processing, and that no traces of radioactive materials were found.

The whitebait was shipped to local stores and retailers.

At a supermarket in Soma City, shoppers were seen buying the fish and checking attached certificates showing the radiation test results.

The whitebait is expected to be auctioned in Tokyo's Tsukiji Wholesale Market on Tuesday.

One shopper said she is happy to see the sale of the local specialty, which she said is the best.
