deadly serious

(UG)
Miyazaki announces retirement

Japan's renowned animation director, Hayao Miyazaki, has officially announced his retirement from making feature films.

Miyazaki explained his decision to about 600 reporters in Tokyo on Friday.

The announcement came as his latest film, "The Wind Rises", is competing for the Golden Lion, the top prize of the Venice International Film Festival.

Miyazaki said he has caused confusion by repeatedly announcing his retirement before, but this time he is deadly serious.

The 72-year-old director said it has taken more time to complete his work recently.

He added that he believes the era of his animation features is now over.

Miyazaki also said he will maintain his involvement with the Ghibli Museum in the Tokyo suburb of Mitaka. He currently heads the museum.

Miyazaki has created a series of hit movies. His 2001 production, "Spirited Away", won a US Academy Award for best animated picture.
