昨年度より小学校の５、６学年で「外国語活動」が必修化されましたが、今年４月に実施された「全国学力・学習状況調査」の結果から、全国の４割を超える小学校で英語学習を４年生以下の学年で行なっていることが明らかになりました。
「テストを受ける」が”sit for the test”と表現されており、目にとまったので掲載します。

Test shows improved basic skills
The results of this year’s national achievement test showed an improvement in basic academic skills, with the gap between the national median and low-scoring prefectures narrowing.
The test was conducted on April 24 with all students in the sixth year of primary school and in the third year of middle school participating for the first time in four years. A research questionnaire given in conjunction with the achievement test found that more than 40 percent of primary schools across the nation carry out English study programs for students in the fourth grade or below.
About 2.19 million students at 30,000 schools sat for the test, which covered Japanese and mathematics. Each subject included two types of questions: “A problems” to measure basic understanding and “B problems” to measure applied skills.
