Female ukai master revives popularity of cormorant fishing
A woman who used to work in a pet shop is now working with birds that catch fish. In doing so, she has revived the popularity of ukai, or fishing with cormorants, a time-honored summer attraction on the Kisogawa river on the border of Aichi and Gifu prefectures.
The number of sightseers watching the “Kisogawa Ukai” show from aboard tour boats, which began operating as usual in June, has increased 40 percent over the same period a year ago, according to local tourism sources.
A key to the rising popularity was the debut in June of Kotomi Inayama, 24, as the first “ukai fisherwoman” in the Tokai region. She is said to have provided a breath of fresh air to the traditional business of catching fish with tame cormorants.
