Japanese teacher incubates eggs without eggshell

A Japanese high school teacher has developed a way to incubate eggs in plastic wrap and a plastic cup to replaces eggshells. The method enables chicks to survive.

60-year-old Yutaka Tahara teaches biology at Oihama High School in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.

He used to open the shells of sperm eggs so that his students could observe the development of embryos inside.

But as chicks would die in the process, Tahara has for 30 years explored methods to incubate eggs without risking the lives of the chicks.

Tahara took embryos out of sperm eggs and put them in special cases consisting of breathable plastic wrap and plastic cups. He kept the temperature and humidity inside the incubator at a constant level.

In a series of experiments, the first chick was hatched in June last year, and has been growing.

Tahara says that the incubation ratio now stands at over 50 percent.

A research report that Tahara wrote about the experiments has been awarded a top prize by an association of high school biology teachers.

Tahara says as chicks can grow without eggshells the method can be used to save embryos when eggshells are broken.
