the New York Timesにあった記事から英語表現を拾います。straitはすでにブログでも採り上げられていますが，the Straits of Dover（ドーバー海峡）のように「海峡」という意味でしばし用いられる単語（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。

しかし，加えて今回の記事のin similar straitsのように「苦境, （特に）経済的困窮」という意味があります（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。straitはその語源が「狭い所」を意味し，そこから狭い水路を表す「海峡」や追いつめられた状態である「苦境」のような意味を持つようになりました。ちなみにstrict（きびしい）やstrain（緊張）も語源は同じです。（Koyamamoto）
