Kate Middleton spent just over 12 hours in labour - a "textbook" time, experts said.

Kate was admitted to hospital "in the early stages of labour" at around 5.30am, it is understood.
Her son was delivered in the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London at 4.24pm.

The average labour for a first-time mother is just over 12 hours.

Consultant obstetrician Patrick O'Brien, spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said: "With first baby, you usually dilate about a centimetre an hour and you've got to get from closed to 10 centimetres - which is fully dilated - so that's about 10 hours.

"When you reach fully dilated usually you wait for an hour or so to allow the baby's head to come as low as possible, and then you push - and the pushing is about an hour to an hour and a half.
"So about 12 hours is the average - sometimes quicker, sometimes slower, but that's what you have to budget for."

「教科書的（お手本通りの）出産」という言い回しも気になりましたが、これから出産という人生の段階を踏むであろうわたしにはdilateという単語が気になりました。これは「子宮口が広がる」という意味の単語だそうです。先生によると名詞形はdilation（cervix: open for childbirth）で、「子宮口開大」というそうです。子宮の収縮で胎児の頭が子宮口をだんだん押し広げて世の中に出てくる前の状態です。
先生は出産に立ち会ったことのある「常時英心人」にはなじみの表現であるはずだと言われていました（呼吸法についても言及されていました。釣りバカ日誌の初期の作品にそんな場面があるらしいです）。

将来のことを考えながら、またひとつ残しておきたい単語だと思いました。（Hatahata）
