fire-gutted

ふるさとで起きた事件、心が痛みます。gutの形容詞形guttedは前にも雑誌に書いたことがありますが(今は亡き『現代英語教育』?)、"seriously damaged or completely destroyed"(LDOCE)という意味で、fireをともなうと完全に焼き尽くされた様子が伝わります(例:We drove slowly past the gutted buildings. 同辞書)。そうえば英国用法ではdevastated(very shocked or disappointed)の意味合いでこれを使うことがあります。

事件が起きたのは平成の大合併周南市と報道されていますが、現場は旧鹿野町の山また山の奥入ったところ。集落の中で何があったのでしょうか。わたしの心もguttedです。(UG)

5 bodies found in fire-gutted homes, nearby homes in Yamaguchi Pref.

YAMAGUCHI, Japan (Kyodo) -- Three bodies were found in two houses gutted by separate fires on Sunday and two other bodies with bruises and cuts were found Monday in nearby houses in Yamaguchi Prefecture, police said.

Police suspect arson and murder in the two fire cases in a mountainous area in the city of Shunan, and are trying to locate a 63-year-old man who was living next to one of the burned houses, suspecting he knows something about the cases.

One body was found in the burned house where a 79-year-old woman lived, and two bodies were found in another house where a couple in their 70s lived.

The two houses are located about 80 meters apart.

Police later found the body of a man in a house and a woman in another house in the area.

Police are trying to identify the bodies.
