to surface #3

(Sugar)

Leap into bay from 27-meter-high bridge claims teen

HIROSHIMA – An 18-year-old high schooler has died in the city of Hiroshima after jumping off the Hiroshima Hatsukaiichi Ohashi bridge into Hiroshima Bay with another boy to impress his friends, police said Thursday.

Hironori Ishihara was pronounced dead early Thursday shortly after being found below the 27-meter-high, 835-meter-long bridge. The other boy, a 16-year-old high schooler, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, they said.

A 19-year-old youth who jumped into the bay after the two failed to surface late Wednesday was rescued safely after fire department and Japan Coast Guard boats were called at around 10:20 p.m., the fire department said.

Ishihara appears to have drowned after ingesting a large amount of seawater, the police said.
