the crux of the matter

BBCの記事から英語表現を拾います。これもEnglish Imperialismのひとつなのでしょう。よく言われていますが、Language Imperialismはconsciousでもunconsciousでも起きうるという現象のひとつでしょう。フランスがこのような言語政策に踏み切ろうとしているというのも驚きです。我々も日本という立場から、英語という言語の広がりについて再考する必要性があると感じました。

さて、前置きが長くなりましたが、the crux of the matterです。『リーダーズ英和辞典』によると意味は「問題の肝心」とあります。最近はthe crux of the biscuitという表現もあるようですが、こちらはその元となった表現。今では「南十字座」を意味するcruxは、そのままのラテン語が語源です。cruxのラテン語の時代は「十字架」という意味の他に「拷問の柱」「拷問」という意味が強かったようです(『羅和辞典』研究社、Elementary Latin Dictionary)。この意味では、現在の英語にもなっており、さらに「最重要点」という意味も加わりました。一方、「十字架」という意味ではcrossに取って代わられた感があります。

このような表現が使われることからして、やはりこの問題に関してはinner circleであるイングランドでも関心が高いのでしょう。このような言語政策に関しては、Byram先生などが論じられているようなsocioeconomicsやpoliticsの観点から考えても興味深く思えます。(Othello)
