engulf in ＃２

A night of fun in California turned into horror when a limousine with 10 people inside caught fire Saturday. They were traveling along the San Mateo Bridge, going across San Francisco Bay.
Five women, including a new bride, were killed. Investigators are still trying to determine how the rear of a limousine became engulfed in smoke and flames as the vehicle traveled on the bridge between San Mateo and Hayward, Calif.

今回取り上げたいengulf inという表現は、以前にも取り上げられていますが（engulfed in - 田邉祐司ゼミ 常時英心：言葉の森から）、「＜波・戦争・火などが＞〜を巻き込む、飲み込む」という意味のようです。（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館）また、LDOCEには” to completely surround or cover something”とあり、リムジンが炎に包まれている悲惨な光景が浮かんできます。

このリムジンの炎上で、花嫁を含む５人の女性が亡くなったそうです。幸せな夜が、一変して恐怖に変わりました。衝突したわけでもなく、なぜ燃え出したのでしょうか。(Nat)
