to bite

(UG)

PSY’S NEW SINGLE “GENTLEMAN” PUZZLES JAPAN

In 2012, when Psy’s hit “Gangnam Style” was breaking the record for being the first YouTube video to reach a billion views, Japan seemed unimpressed by the passion spread throughout the world for the South Korean artist’s song.
Psy’s popular track was not nearly as successful in Japan as it was everywhere else in the world; it actually seems that Japanese were immune to its lyrics and dance moves, the international press comments.

When Psy appeared on a popular Japanese talk show to talk about the song in 2012, the viewer response was not very positive.

Psy’s follow-up single”Gentleman,” however, seems to work in a different way for Japan. On April 12, “Gentleman” was leaked onto the internet, and instead of being rejected like “Gangnam Style,” the track has divided Japan into lovers and haters of the song.

It has the benefit of being a good song to dance to and “Gentleman” is also not as Korea-centric as its predecessor, which also helps to increase appeal in Japan. But many Japanese are still not biting. In fact, the single’s release has stirred up a lot of responses like “I do not understand why Psy is popular” or “I do not see much creativity in it.”
