spring into action

ボストン・マラソンでの事件がブログでも何度も取り上げられていますが、私もボストン・マラソンに関連したニュースから英語表現を拾いたいと思います。元NFL選手の方が、ボストン・マラソンでの事件の際に救助活動にあたっていました。

Ex-Patriots lineman carried woman to safety after Boston blasts

Amid the chaos of the explosions at the Boston Marathon on Monday, former New England Patriots offensive lineman Joe Andruzzi sprang into action. Andruzzi -- whose foundation, the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, had a team participating in the race--was photographed carrying a woman to safety by Bill Greene of the Boston Globe.

今回取り上げる表現は、spring into actionです。springといえば「春,ばね」などの名詞はおなじみですが、動詞では「〈物が〉急に［激しく］動く」(『ウィズダム英和辞典　第二版』三省堂)というような意味もあり、今回の記事中ではspring into actionという形で「〈機械などが〉急に動き出す」(ibid)という意味で用いられています。また、英英では"to suddenly start working or doing something"(Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary)と定義されていました。今回の記事中では、「とっさに行動に移した(とっさに救助活動に当たった)」という事ですね。(Astroriver)
