different from/ to/ than

A flavour of utility - Google and the European Commission

The result will be that Google’s pages will look different to Europeans from the way they do now—and different from the pages that Americans see. The Federal Trade Commission, which concluded a separate investigation into Google in January, settled on much milder terms. Even so, those who have been urging the commission to take an even harder line (not only Microsoft, but also Expedia and Tripadvisor, two travel sites, Foundem, a shopping search engine, German newspaper publishers and others) will be disappointed.

おそらく普通に学校で英語を学ぶのは、different fromのかたち。でも、実はdifferent toなどのかたちもたまに見かけます。どっちか間違いでしょうか？

両方オッケーなのです。学習辞典などによっては“from”は「正式」で、”to”が「イギリス英語の話し言葉」、”than”が「アメリカ英語」という表記がされています(e.g. 『ウィズダム英和辞典』、Swan, 2005)。

私はイングランド、オーストラリアでは、少なくともすべて聞いたことがあったので、これは本当か？と思い、コーパスにて調べてみました(多文化多言語国家という事実は無視します)。

British National Corpusで調べてみると：
different toが484件
different fromが 3275件
different thanが51件
それぞれヒットしました。標準とされているdifferent fromがもっとも多く扱われていることがわかり、次いで流行りとされているdifferent toが扱われていることがわかりました。

次にCorpus of Contemporary American Englishを調べてみると：
different toが405件
different fromが13442件
different thanが3846件
ヒットしました。やはり標準のdifferent fromが最も多く扱われています。次に扱われているのがdifferent thanです。

調べてみると、少なくとも1950年半ばまではロンドンではdifferent fromしか使われてなかったが、以前からイングランド北東部ではdifferent toが使われており、次第にdifferent toがイングランドで頻繁に使われるようになったことがわかりました。今ではアメリカ英語であるdifferent thanがテレビなどを通じて入り、BBCの放送でも使われるようになったようです(柏野、2006)。

両方の結果から考えると、学校ではdifferent fromのかたちで教えるのが無難で、応用としてtoやthanのかたちを教えるのが良いと思います。論理的にもtoとfromは理に適っているように思えますので、どちらもわかりやすいと思います。学校以外でも話すときは、fromが無難かな、と思います。(Othello)
