live [lead] a hand-to-mouth existence

北朝鮮はどのようにして資金を調達しているのでしょうか。CNN.comに興味深い記事が載っていました。

How does North Korea make its money?

"Most people live a pretty hand-to-mouth existence in the North apart from the elite."

live (from) hand to mouthという表現を過去に先輩が取り上げておられますが、 cf. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20121114/1352867313 今回注目する表現は、live [lead] a hand-to-mouth existenceです。live [lead] a hand-to-mouth existenceを調べてみると「その日暮らしをする」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂)という意味が定義されていました。また、Cambridge Dictionaries Onlineでは"having only just enough money to live"と定義されています。
live from day to dayと同じ表現と思っていたですが、辞書で調べてみると「(先のことを考えずに)その日その日を暮らす」(『ジーニアス英和辞典 第4版』大修館)、"providing for a day at a time with little thought for the future "(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)と定義されているように、どうやら異なる様です。live from day to dayは「その日暮らしを強いられてる訳ではない」というニュアンスがあるのでしょうか。(Astroriver)
