The flag flies at half-mast
トーリーではなく、The Guardianにあるサッチャー元首相の記事を採り上げます。こんな時に必ず上がるのが赤字のThe flag flies at half-mastという表現です。これは日本語で「半旗を掲げる」とそのまま訳され、意味は「弔意を表す」です。
半旗それ自体は映画などでも現れますので、観たことがある方も多いと思いますが、下の画像のような状態を指します。詳しい説明は避けますが、Wikipediaなどにざっくりとした説明があるので参考にすると良いでしょう(Half-mast - Wkipedia)。
