Hang in there.

UG先生が既に取り上げられている記事の中(sticks to guns - 田邉祐司ゼミ 常時英心：言葉の森から)で、個人的に気になる表現がありましたので、同じ記事から取り上げさせていただきます。

Abe never stopped insisting on timelines for returning U.S. military facilities and areas south of Kadena Air Base.
When the negotiations were in the final stage, senior officials of the Foreign and Defense ministries reported to Abe at the Prime Minister's Office on March 26 that the situation had reached an extremely difficult stage.
Abe was quoted by his close aides as telling them: "Hang in there. Never give up."

気になった表現は、“Hang in there.”です。hang inは、「≪略式≫あきらめず頑張る」という意味があり、Hang in there!で「（困難に直面している人を激励して）あきらめるな、（最後まで）がんばれ」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館）という意味になります。この表現は、相手が負けそうな時やつらい状況に陥っている時、つまり相手が何かに対して諦めかけているときに、よく使われるようです。LDOCEでも調べてみると、“(especially American English) to remain brave and determined when you are in a difficult situation”とありました。

「がんばれ！」を意味するいくつかの表現で、私が知っていた表現はCheer up.とKeep it up.でした。しかし、どのような状況でこれらを使い分けるかわからなかったため、色々調べてみると、Cheer up.は「元気出して」というように、落ち込んでいる人を励ますときに使われ、Keep it up.も文字通り、「その調子でがんばれ」というように、現時点で頑張っている人などに対して使うようです。

これらの表現を、場面をしっかり区別して使い分けていきたいです。(Nat)
