家からなかなか出て来ない車泥棒に対して取った手段は…警察犬の真似でした。

The impersonation of the animals was so successful the two men gave themselves up fearing the animals were about to be unleashed on them.
Officers had stood outside the building where the two men were holed up while one of them mimicked the loud bark of the dogs used by police.
female impersonatorという表現を過去に先輩が取り上げておられますが、cf. http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20121206/1354804900 今回取り上げる単語は、impersonationです。impersonationの動詞形であるimpersonateを辞書で引いてみると、「…（の声・表情・動作など）をまねる；（偽って）…のふりをする」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂)と定義されていました。
ここで個人的に気になった事が、mimic, imitateなどの単語とのニュアンスの違いです。まず、LDOCEでimitateとmimicの一番目の語義を調べてみると、imitateは"to copy the way someone behaves, speaks, moves etc, especially in order to make people laugh"、mimicは"to copy the way someone speaks or behaves, especially in order to make people laugh"と定義されていました。どちらも笑わせるためにする、というニュアンスが入るのでしょうか。
一方、impersonateを同じようにLDOCEで調べてみると、二番目の語義に"to copy someone's voice and behaviour, especially in order to make people laugh"というmimicとimitateに似たような定義があるのですが、一番目の語義には"to pretend to be someone else by copying their appearance, voice, and behaviour, especially in order to deceive people"という意味が定義されていました。笑わすためだけでなく、騙すためにまねをする、というニュアンスがimpersonateにはあるのではないでしょうか。
辞書で調べていくうちに、「まねる」という意味を持つ表現には、take off, mockなどという表現もある事を知ったのですが、記事が長くなりすぎそうなので今回は自分が元々知っていたmimic, imitate及び、今回取り上げた記事に使用されていた、impersonateの３つの単語の比較のみで失礼させて頂きます。
それにしても犬の真似をするとは…犬のものまねに自信が無い限り、とてもできるものではありませんね。犬のモノマネに関しては評判が良かったのでしょうか。(Astroriver)
