Union 4-year-old left in home with dead mother - How much will he remember?

The 4½-year-old boy who survived for days alone in a Union apartment with his dead mother is now in the care of others, his ordeal triggering a national outpouring of sympathy and concern.

Is there any chance that experience will fade into oblivion, joining that part of his childhood he simply cannot recall? Unfortunately, the answer is no.

"After the age of 3, they’re going to remember," said Michael Scheeringa, a child psychiatrist with Tulane University’s School of Medicine who specializes in preschoolers and trauma.

The boy is likely too old to have the episode fall under the category of "infantile amnesia" — that blank slate of babyhood upon which nothing is permanently etched. That typically wanes by the age of 3, when it is replaced by a more permanent form of memory that can be tapped for the rest of one’s life.
